چکیده

VEIL (Virtual Ethernet Identifier Layer) is a novel concept for below IP networking. It addresses the scalability, efficiency and reliability challenges facing the traditional Ethernet, while retaining its simplicity. Furthermore, it provides a uniform (below IP) convergence layer to support a large, dynamic and heterogeneous (layer-2) network that is capable of connecting hundreds of thousands or more diverse physical devices. The key idea in the design of VEIL is to introduce a topology-aware, structured virtual id (vid) space onto which both physical identifiers as well as higher layer addresses/names are mapped. VEIL completely eliminates network-wide flooding in both the data and control planes, and thus is highly scalable and robust. In this poster, we present a Click Modular Router based implementation of VEIL, which constructs a scalable “plug-&play” layer-2 network which has many advanced features such as mutlipath-routing, “flooding-free” address resolution and seamless support for mobility of end hosts connecting to the network. Finally, the current implementation runs on top of real hardware, which can be deployed with several other traditional Ethernet switches, or as a complete network of VEIL switches alone. Therefore, it can be readily deployed to create feature-rich, largescale Ethernet networks for various needs.

Simplifying Manageability, Scalability and Host Mobility in Large-Scale Enterprise Networks using VEIL-click

The explosive growth in the network driven services and devices is causing existing networks to continually expand to accommodate the demands set by them. However, underlying network architecture can not sustain this continual expansion. As a result, several ad-hoc mechanisms are used as workarounds, which make the networks increasingly complicated and difficult to manage. In this paper, we pre...

VEIL: A “Plug-&-Play” Virtual (Ethernet) Id Layer for Below IP Networking

This paper proposes VEIL—a novel, “plug-&-play” Virtual (Ethernet) Identifier (Id) Layer for below IP networking. The objective is two-fold: i) VEIL directly addresses the scalability, efficiency and reliability challenges facing the traditional Ethernet, while retaining its “plug-&-play” feature; ii) but perhaps more importantly, VEIL provides a uniform (below IP) convergence layer to support ...

Automotive Ethernet: security opportunity or challenge?

The automotive industry’s future trends, such as automated driving or advanced driver assistance, require large bandwidths to handle massive data streams and strongly depend on well timed communication. The Ethernet technology is seen as a suitable candidate to cover those needs for vehicle-internal networks; however, Ethernet involves security issues. Thus, by discussing automotive Ethernet at...

Building Scalable Self-configuring Networks with SEIZE

IP networks today require massive effort to configure and manage. Ethernet is vastly simpler to manage, but does not scale beyond small local area networks. This paper describes an alternative network architecture called SEIZE that achieves the best of both worlds: The scalability of IP combined with the simplicity of Ethernet. SEIZE provides plugand-play functionality via flat addressing, whil...

Xcellence in Networking

Xcell Journal Third Quarter 2011 Traditional telecom networks are fundamentally configured to transport voice, such as phone service. Internet services piggyback on this legacy platform. Currently, designers are creating the next-generation network (NGN) to transport data, voice and video simultaneously, providing transparency and scalability while minimizing total operational cost. The NGN is ...
